"Il Leone"

In 1989 Nigel Mansell joined Scuderia Ferrari at a time of immense change in Formula 1. Turbocharged engines were replaced by larger capacity naturally aspirated units (a glorious V12 in the Ferrari of course) and the team were the first to introduce a semi-automatic paddle shift gear change.
Despite real concerns about the reliability of the new 640 car, Mansell pulled off a shock first win at the opening race of the season in Brazil. This remarkable win, and the fact he the last driver personally chosen by Enzo Ferrari himself immediately granted Mansell hero status with the Tifosi, who christened him "Il Leone".
